Fixing Back Neck Gaping – Step 1: Width Correction
This is the fifth post in a series about neckline fitting corrections. This step focuses on the first correction for back neck gaping issues. If the gaping issue persists after this step, continue to the next post for additional adjustments.
In some body types, the back neck width may be larger than the front neck width. This is the first thing to check when addressing back neck gaping.
Step-by-Step Width Correction:
- Pin the gaping area on your sample and measure the amount pinned.
- Place your front pattern piece on top of your back pattern piece, aligning the High Point Shoulder (HPS).
- If the back pattern neck width is wider than the front neck width, reduce the back neck width.
- If you have an exposed zipper, allow about 1/4” (0.6 cm) for half the zipper width.
- Move in the back neck width at the HPS the required amount to make neck widths match.
- Adjust the Low Point Shoulder (LPS) to maintain the same shoulder length as the front.
- Compare the HPS adjustment with the pinned amount:
- If it’s smaller than pinned, continue to the next step in the series.
- If it’s equal or slightly larger, the correction is complete.
Remember: If your garment has a princess seam, apply the same corrections as used for the front neck panel. Use corrections for princess seams from the armhole or from the shoulder as needed.
