Increasing the Back Width from Across the Armholes – Option 3C

We saw how to fix tight backs and low back necklines with one technique. Now we discuss a great correction for most men (as they complain about this issue regularly) or if you have a muscular body with extra muscle mass in the shoulder blades and chest. It’s great for swimmers or athletic builds, too.

Steps to Increase Back Width – Option 3C

  1. Cut the Pattern Vertically: If you feel like the lower across-back area AND chest is tight, cut your pattern vertically in the center back area.
  2. Tape and Measure: Tape and measure the amount you’ve opened.
  3. Add Half the Amount: Come back to your pattern and slash it as shown, adding half of the amount to your pattern.
  4. Smooth Seams: Smooth out the side seam and shoulder seam.

This is a great solution when you need more movement in the lower across-back and chest area.

You’ll notice that with this correction, the side seams are no longer mirrored. It breaks that rule, but it’s okay to break the rules for custom-fit clothing.
