Wide Shoulders Corrections – Adjust the Armhole

Do your armhole seams hang too far past the Low Point Shoulder (LPS)? Does it feel or look like your shoulders are too wide?

If so, this post shows a simple method for reducing wide shoulders by adjusting the armhole, without using the more complicated slash-and-close method.

Step-by-Step Armhole Adjustment for Wide Shoulders

  1. Identify the issue: The LPS is too low at the armhole area. You may notice excess fabric in the across-front area.
  2. Pin the amount you want to reduce in the across-shoulder area at the armhole.
  3. Measure the amount you’ve pinned and note it down.
  4. Mark that amount inwards from the armhole at the LPS to get your new shoulder width.
  5. Adjust the sleeve: After this change, the armhole may be slightly bigger. You can:
    • Add to the sleeve cap height to fit the new armhole, or
    • Raise the armhole slightly and keep the sleeve as-is.

We’ll cover narrow across-shoulder adjustments next. Interestingly, it’s the same method but reversed, to increase rather than reduce shoulder width.
